Why I invested
I like to invest in companies I see as pioneers building the future, and Alphabet has been doing that for years, from Google Search and Android to YouTube, Google Cloud and now its Gemini AI models. It already has billions of users, and I think it’s well placed to keep building the next generation of search, AI and cloud computing.
I see it as a long-term holding in a company that keeps reinventing itself.
What does Alphabet do?
Alphabet is the parent company of Google. Most of its money still comes from advertising: the ads you see on Google Search and YouTube. But it does a lot more:
- Google Search & YouTube: the biggest money-makers.
- Google Cloud: renting computing power and AI tools to businesses. This is growing fastest.
- Android, Chrome, Pixel phones and subscriptions like YouTube Premium and Google One.
- Gemini: Google’s AI models and app.
- Other Bets: newer projects such as Waymo self-driving taxis.
How is it doing? (the simple version)
- Q2 2026: revenue rose 24% to $119.8bn. Google Cloud grew 82% to $24.8bn.
- Operating margin: 34%, so about a third of revenue is left as operating profit.
- Next results: expected around 28 October 2026.
*Why the asterisk? In Q2 2026 Alphabet booked a one-off $98bn gain, mostly from the rising value of shares it owns in other companies. That boosted reported profit a lot, which makes the trailing P/E look lower than the underlying business would suggest. The forward P/E (based on expected future profit) is higher.
What do analysts say?
According to StockAnalysis.com, analysts’ average rating is “Strong Buy” with an average 12-month price target of $430.51 (as of 16 October 2026).
Things that could go wrong
- AI chatbots changing how people search, which could hurt the ad business.
- Competition and antitrust (competition-law) cases in the US and EU.
- Very heavy spending on AI data centres. If it doesn’t pay off, profits suffer.
